I have a rather strange problem, but Mary West suggested I write to you.
My g3grandmother was Irena Green of Jefferson County AL. Her date of birth was 1805-1815 based on her marriage date of 1824. I'd put the date closer to 1808-9 because the groom had to produce proof that he had the parents permission to marry Irena. Irena m. Randolph Carter Bibb in Jefferson Co. on 7 Apr 1824.
Irena was the ... daughter of Elizabeth (Betty Green). According to
family sources, the father was William Bucklew. ("Family sources" means without any proof.<g>) Are you aware of any Bucklew family in this area of AL at the critical time?
I normally would discount this type of hearsay, but I have yet to find an error in the oral information I've received from this family. I'm also grasping at straws.....
Irena Green's mother Elizabeth later marries a John G. Butler.

What I have is the marriage record of Irena Green & Randolph Carter Bibb from 1824. She must have been underage, because there is also a statement signed by Elizabeth & John G.C. Butler giving permission for the marriage.
I have another document from a little later (which I can't put my hand on at this minute) where Randolph gives money to the Butlers for the care of Irena before her marriage. Also a marriage license between Butler & Elizabeth Green.
...If there were any legal documents, they wouldn't be in AL, because records begin there in 1816--three years before statehood.
Using 16 as a putative age for Irena & figuring that Elizabeth was possibly 16-20 when Irena was born, I figure Elizabeth was born 1788-92. I'll have to go back & check the censuses to see where Eliz was born. Carol

connection - very interesting! Some of my thoughts...
Following is an exact transcription from the will of your William Buckelew of Marengo Co.
"... It is my will that my grand children that is the children
and heirs of William Green my son the children & heirs of Elizabeth Butler shall have their full portion of the valuation of my property (except the land) to be paid them in money by my Executors hereinafter named which amount of money must be raised out of the other property or to be paid by the several heirs to whom the negroes are devised
..."
I don't think the wording of this will leaves any question
regarding the relationship of Elizabeth Butler to William. It clearly states that Elizabeth's children are William's grandchildren.
The reason that Elizabeth's children did not share in the slaves
is that William left all the slaves to four specifically named people,
Jacob, Lodewick, Sarah & Rachel. Read the transcription below:
"... It is my wish and desire that my son Jacob shall allow said
negro slaves all they can make after supporting them paying their
taxes all my other negro slaves I desire to be devided into four equal parts as near as is possible by persons appointed for that purpose one lot of which I give and devise to my son Jacob Greene one lot to Lodewick Greene one lot to Sarah Kelley one lot to Rachael Buckaloo ... the negroes bequeathed to my said children I desire to be divided as before mentioned & it is my desire that my children to whom the negroes are devised shall keep them in the family and treat them well ..."
There are several entries in the Ancestral File in the Morman
library that appear to be this Elizabeth Green Butler. Because the Ancestral File is full of errors, I normally discount most that is there, but the entries on Elizabeth intrigue me because they contain some exact dates. According to the AF entries,
Elizabeth Green was b. 9 Jul 1786 in VA to Elizabeth Buckaloo b. 21 Jan 1770 VA, d. 1812 Jefferson Co, AL and William Green b. ca 1768 VA. Elizabeth ma 1) John Haynes 2) a Butler.
Exact dates normally imply some sort of legitimate source. I
wrote to the people who submitted the info several times over the
years but received no reply.
The mystery here is that Jefferson Co, AL was Creek land in 1812
so I don't know where to look for her death. However, since Irena is also placed in Jefferson Co, perhaps we should check the records there for Elizabeth's death, perhaps at a later date?

What proof is available that Irena is Elizabeth's daughter?
Jack, you made copies of William's estate settlement. If Irena was Elizabeth's dau - legitimate or otherwise - she should have received a share of his estate, since he did not specify "legitimate" grandchildren but simply stated "grandchildren". Of course, there is a possibility that she was unknown to the executors of the estate but that is unlikely. Her mother was obviously dec'd when William died in 1842. I will check the copies you sent me later for anything on Irena.

According to the AF files, Elizabeth's first husband was John Haynes, b. 1785 Oslo, Chrstn, Norway.
Any info Carol can provide on Irena might go a long way tying up
some of these loose ends.
Who gave permission for Irena to marry? Was her mother still
alive in 1824?

Elizabeth first married John Haynes. Born in 1785 in Oslo, Chrstn, Norway.
About 1809 when Elizabeth was 22, she second married John G. Butler. John G. died before 15 May 1834.
They had the following children:

1865, 10 Jan; Probate Court, Clarke Co., AL: This day came Lucy Administrator & filed an appraisment & inventory of said estate which is ordered to be recorded.
"BUCKALOE; Rachel: b. c1785 SC; grandmother of Catherine E. All the Buckaloes in Marengo were related and of the family originally in Bucks Co. PA, NJ, etc. They appear 1735 Henrico Co., VA; to NC & SC; to GA and to Dallas, Marengo, Pickens Cos., AL." "Marengo Co. Early Settlers (Series II), Vol. 8, Issue 42, p. 6.
"She is named in the May 7 1841 will of William Green. Relationship is not
mentioned. He does name his sons Jacob and Lodowick Green, wife Elizabeth,
sarah Kelly and a grandson,William Green, son and heir of Jonathan Green.( I
don't have the Book or page handy) but is Marengo Co Al
"Deed Book R page 367 Marengo Co Al March 3 1858--Ezekiel Buckalue gift deeds
to his wife Rachel the following slaves, Marshall, a boy about 11, Jane, a girl
about 8 and Martha, a girl about 6.....Ezekiel Buckalue executed this deed of
conveyance,cheerfully and freely, as he he considers it right, as the said
slaves descended from the estate of William Green, deceased, THE FATHER OF THE
SAID RACHEL BUCKALEU one of his children and heirs at law."
Rachel married Ezekiel Buckalew (686) , son of George Buckalew (299) (about 1744-before 1806) & Mary (about 1762-). Born about 1790 in SC. Ezekiel died after 1860; he was 70.
Another Marengo Co. record seems to indicate another, maybe his first, wife, named Mary.
1827, 15 July; Minutes of Shiloh Baptist Church, Marengo County, AL; Ezekiel Buckelew, founding member and deacon.
1829, 30 Jan; Marengo Co., Marriage: Matilda Buckaloo to James B. Overton by L.B. Landrum; Ezekial Buckaloo, bondsman. Another source has a marriage date of 30 June 1829 and the groom's name as James Ouston.
1830 Marengo Co., AL, Census, p. 354 (MP #128): Is Rachel Green the wife.
Richard, John and James Huckaby and Jonathan Montgomery are on the next page of the 1830 census. I viewed the microfishe of this census on 19 Feb 1997. (LTB)
1835, 1 July; Marengo Co., AL, Land Entry: Ezekiel Buckaloo, of Miss., received land in Sect 26, T13, R3E.
In my notes I have an Ezekial Buckalou,Planter-Shiloh township 13, range 3 E. (Therin's Marengo Co. Directory for 1860-61) .
1837, 29 Aug, Marengo Co., AL, Deed: Ezekiel Buckalow and Rachel, his wife, to William R. Bowler (or Bowlen), all of Marengo Co., for $550 -- a 79 & 90/100 acre tract. It was the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec. 26 and the SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 23, all in T13, R3E. Ack. by Ezekiel & Rachell Buckerlew on the same date before George Bareklew, JP.
1850 Marengo Co., AL, Census: Farmer, married Rachel Green of Edgefield Co., SC. Other children are not known. The name Garrett appears among Buckalew descendants in AL, lending further credence to the supposition that Garrett of SC is of the same family. The "Elizabeth" is probably Catherine E., daughter of Wm H. [I suppose to be Ezekiel's son], who went to live with her grandparents. She was still with them at the census of 1860.
1853, 22 June, Marengo Co., AL, Deed: Rachael to Thomas H. Skinner.
1858, 3 Mar.; Marengo Co., AL, Gift Deed: Ezekiel Buckalue, "...for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars to me in hand paid by Rachael Buckalue, and the further consideration of the natural love and affection which I have for my wife, the said Rachael Buckalue..." -- the following named and described slaves: Marshall, a boy about 11 years; Jane, a girl about 8 year & Martha, a girl about 6 years. The slaves were given to Rachael, and to the children of her body. "...Ezekiel Buckalue executed this deed of conveyance, cheerfully and freely, as he considers it right, as the said slaves descended from the estate of William Green, deceased, the father of the said Rachael Buckaleu, one of his children and heirs at law." Wit.: A.B. Hosea & J. W. hall. Acknowledged by Ezekiel the same day before George Barkley, JP.
1860, 13 June, Marengo Co., AL, Census.
"Ezekiel and Rachel Buckelew in House 106. House 107 was Gideon Lucy age 38 b SC wife Elizabeth 30 b SC. He was a physician. Think he is the ?Lucy who was ordered to conduct the inventory for Rachel's estate. Wonder if he or wife were relatives?" (31 Dec 1997 e-mail)

The above transaction could possibly be that of this Jacob's Uncle Jacob.
