The Love Connection

Samuel Love and Elizabeth Nation had multiple children, including Sarah Elizabeth Love who married William Ragsdale and Kiziah Love who married John Lawley/Lolly.

William and Sarah Love Ragsdale have several connections to Britta Green and the McGuires. First, William and Sarah's son James Marion Ragsdale and wife Drucilla lived next door to Britta and John McGuire in Jefferson County in 1860. While there's no smoking gun, I believe that Britta named her second daughter Mary Drucilla after her sister and Drucilla Ragsdale.

Also William and Sarah Love Ragsdale's children married McGuires: Sidney Jackson Ragsdale married Sarah Ann McGuire, and Louisa Caroline (Carrie) Ragsdale married Robert McGuire. The website below doesn't list all its sources, but everything I have checked has checked out, so I am inclined to accept its data:

http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~mytexasroots/wmragsdale.htm

In another Love line...

Kiziah Love married John Lawley and had umpteen children, among whom was Lurana Lawley who married William Henry Davis.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/20465111/person/951564645

And Carolyn E. Davis married Elisha Lawley.

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/20465111/person/951564754

Is William H. Davis brother to James B. Davis who married Mahala Green?? How about Caroline Davis?

And what's Love got to do with it, anyway????

Nancy E.E. Green—Just the facts, ma'am

For a long time I have suspected that Nancy Elizabeth Greene, aka Nancy Ellen Green, was related to Britta Ann and Mary Ann Green. While there's still no smoking gun (direct DNA comparison via Gedmatch.com), there are enough matches on Ancestry to convince me that it's true. Here then are facts I can prove about her with documentary evidence.

Nancy E. Green/e was born in either AL or more likely Georgia about 1832. Hmmmmm....We know this from the 1860, 1870 and 1880 U.S. Censuses.

1860:

The 1880 Census tells us that her father was born in SC and her mother was born in GA. Maybe...

On Sunday, February 24, 1856, she married Sanford V. Garrett in Shelby County as Ellen Green. Minister of the Gospel L.B McDonald officiated with a license signed by J. M. McClanahan, Judge of Probate.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QS7-L9HV-W62P?i=433&cc=1743384

Nancy Ellen had several children with Sanford, including James B., born 1857; Thomas G., born and died about 1860; and Mary Elizabeth, born 1863. Hmmmm...More on that tidbit anon. There may have been a boy named Josh; several Ancestry trees list him but I have never seen any documentary proof of his existence. Maybe he existed—I would love to see the evidence.

Nancy Ellen and Sanford were married for about five years. I really hope they were happy years because it was all over when Sanford left to fight for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He enlisted and served in Company K, AL Third Infantry and then moved to the White Plains Rangers, Company C, Fifth Alabama. Various family trees and online sources say he died anywhere from 1861 - 1864. The best source, his Confederate death record, says he died on October 11, 1861, at the Clay St. Hospital, Richmond, Henrico County, VA.

https://www.fold3.com/image/11497496

Sanford is buried in Hollywood Cemetery, Richmond, VA. In an odd discrepancy, his death is listed at Findagrave.com as December 16, 1862.

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/93141573/sanford-v-garrett

Hmmmm....

The 1866 State Census for Alabama shows Mrs. Ellen Garrett living in Township 24, Range 12 East, Shelby County. The location is near/in Montevallo. The census entry agrees completely with the the household that should be showing: one male under 10 (James Garrett, about 10), one female under 10 (Mary E., about three), and one female over 30 (Nancy Ellen, about 34). Thomas Garrett died young and Josh (if he existed) probably died young as well.

Significantly, Mrs. Brittan McGuire (Britta Ann), James Adams (NEG's future husband), and Henry Backus (father of JG's future wife) live in the same area. It makes total sense for Nancy and Britta to have moved closer to each other after losing husbands to the War, doesn't it?

According to this site, Ellen Garrett married James Adams in Shelby County on January 21, 1868. James Adams was about 66 and she was about 36; ages extrapolated from the 1870 Census.

https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/7163/4257737_00249/13047121?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3d1870usfedcen%26gsln%3dadams%26gsfn_x%3d1%26gsln_x%3dNS%26msbdy%3d1833%26msbdy_x%3d1%26msbdp%3d2%26msrdy_x%3d1%26msrpn__ftp%3dshelby%252c%2balabama%252c%2busa%26msrpn__ftp_x%3d1%26msrpn%3d2683%26msrpn_x%3d1%26hc%3d50%26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26redir%3dfalse%26uidh%3dwy5&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults

By the 1870 US Census for AL, James and Nancy E. had a five-month-old son named James R. While the child's age doesn't jive with the dates on his tombstone (December 1869), it is clear that young James—later to be known as Robert Lee—was born in wedlock. Hmmmmm....

Note the difference in the name our gal is using between 1866/68 and 1870: Mrs. Ellen Garrett to Nancy E. Adams. We know it's the same person because of the other children listed in the household.

In the 1880 US Census for AL, Nancy Adams is living on Beat 4, Village of Montevallo. She is widowed, at home, born GA, father born SC, mother born GA. Also in the household is son Robert Lee, 10. Neighbors: Elbert Nelson (husband of daughter Mary E.), Mary Large, John Bradford, Shortridge, Stephen Dill, Acker, West, Wilson, Bradford, E. M. Carleton (one of Britta and her neighbors in 1866). So James Adams left or most likely died between 1870 and 1880. Children James Garrett, Mary Garrett Nelson, and Robert Lee are still living.

From a letter shared by Robert Lee's granddaughter, we know that Nancy also included "Elizabeth" among her given names. Robert Lee wrote:

“I was a six year old boy on the train with my mother (Nancy Elizabeth Greene) enroute from our hometown Montevallo, Ala. to Selma, to visit my brother...”

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/19413000/person/818356771/media/1?pgnum=1&pg=0&pgpl=pid%7cpgNum

Nancy Adams disappears after the 1880 Census. She died in Montevallo, Shelby County, AL, probably after 1890, according to another letter Robert Lee wrote about his life:

{I was married} "...June 4, 1890, about 8 pm by Rev Rice.  Left on our honeymoon the next evening for Rome Ga where I was a train dispatcher for ETValley Ry.  We stopped at my sister's home, Mrs Ed Nelson, in Rome GA.  The RR transferred me to Selma Alabama.  From Selma we moved to Paduca Ky with C&O Ry.  My mother died at Montevallo Ala."

http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/19413000/person/818356771/media/2?pgnum=1&pg=0&pgpl=pid%7cpgNum

These letters contain lots of useful nuggets about the lives of Nancy's descendants, but as this blog post is specifically about the documented facts of Nancy Elizabeth Ellen Green's life, that's all I can prove. Other guesses and theories will just have to wait for the next post.

Refinement on "BREAKTHROUGH!"

I should mention that my cousin who is much more educated about the science of DNA pointed out that we can't be 100% percent sure that Graphen Holt Greene is the brother/cousin/uncle of our Britta Ann Green, born 1834 in AL, until we compare DNA segments, and they match.

In addition, "triangulation" really means comparing at least two segments from known descendants against suspected descendants to conclude that they match. Here's a description:

The definition of triangulation in this context means:
  • To find a common segment
  • Of reasonable size (generally 7cM or over)
  • That is confirmed to a common ancestor with at least two other individuals
  • Who are not close family
Close family generally means parents, siblings, sometimes grandparents, although parents and grandparents can certainly be used to verify that the match is valid. The best triangulation situation is when you match those two other people through a second child, meaning siblings of your ancestor.
https://dna-explained.com/category/triangulation/
Since Ancestry doesn't have a chromosome browser, it won't be possible to scientifically triangulate to a high degree of certainty until some of GHG's descendants can be persuaded to send their raw DNA data to Gedmatch.

I'm on it.

In the meantime, let me bolster my claim that GHG is Britta's relative by adding these facts:

• I currently manage or have access to seven DNA kits at Ancestry of people that we can prove are descended from Britta Ann Green, born 1834 in AL. They include one great-great grandchild and six great-great-great grandchildren.

• I can identify the DNA kits of dozens of other people who are known/proven to descend from Britta Ann Green.

• BAG was married twice, once to John L. McGuire and once to Mike Flynn. I have access to the kits of descendants from both of those marriages.

• BAG is my third great-grandmother. If the descendants of GHG were related to me, they'd probably be in the vicinity of fourth to sixth cousins. Same with most of the Ancestry kits I manage or have access to.

It is possible that for people to match IBC (identical by chance) rather than IBD (identical by descent). Not every Ancestry member who lists GHG as an ancestor will match me or the kits I manage/access. And not every family tree at Ancestry has the correct ancestors in the correct line.

However, in 12 examples of Ancestry members who list GHG as an ancestor, there are multiple matches between those kit owners and the kits I manage/access. In addition some of those kits simultaneously match the kits of Britta's descendants from both marriages.

So I'm convinced. And when I have this many matches, I'm usually right.

Mike Flinn was a puddler

Mike Flinn/Flynn/Flin was the second husband of Britta Ann Green. He was a puddler, a highly skilled metal worker in the rolling mills around Shelby, Bibb, and Jefferson Counties in Alabama. Born in Ireland, he was in the States by 1868, when he married Britta in Bibb County. Here's the marriage license:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939Z-YCS3-BF?i=415&cc=1743384

Puddlers had to be strong because they had to handle hot, heavy equipment and materials. They had to be observant because they had to watch the pig iron processing. They had to be intuitive because they had to know when the time was just right to complete the handling process. They were rough, tough men.

Here are links to the Wikipedia entries about puddlers and puddling:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_puddler

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Puddling_(metallurgy)

Britta appears as "Mrs. Brittan McGuire" in the 1866 State Census for AL. Though she was living in Shelby County near Montevallo, she was also in close proximity to Brierfield Ironworks, where Mike Flinn was likely working. A widow with three or four living children, she would have needed a husband for the income. A hard worker with a highly strenuous job, Mike would have needed a pleasant place to come home to at the end of the day. It may have been a marriage of love or convenience, but it likely held advantages for both of them.

Though I can't prove it, I have often suspected that Britta married two alcoholics. John L. McGuire's father Davidson was kicked out of his church for being drunk. John L. often got into trouble and was kicked out of the same church. After Britta married Mike Flinn, both older daughters married very young, possibly to get out of the house. Often people tend to marry mates with behavior patterns similar to their parents'.  One marries the familiar. Britta's second daughter, Mary Drucilla McGuire married Sim Eddins, a notorious drunk. It is well within the realm of possibility that John L. and Mike both liked to knock a few back.

I recently found this diary entry from Thomas M. Fancher, a nineteenth century Bibb County farmer. The source is AlabamaPioneers.com, a genealogical treasure trove for those of us with Alabama roots. The site has several free features and some features that are available only through the paid service called Patreon. Here's the link for this particular entry, but you have to pay to see it:

http://www.alabamapioneers.com/transcription-of-a-excerpts-from-diary-by-thomas-m-fancher-bibb-county-alabama-from-1871-1889/

From the diary of Thomas Fancher

"December 24, 1883

"By the number of jugs and kegs in the express office one would believe they will certainly have a lively time around about Brierfield {Iron Works}. I would guess there was not less than two hundred jugs and kegs from one to five gallons. Prohibition is not doing much gook in that portion. If it was just so because of Christmas it would not be so much matter, but it is constantly so there and cant be prevented. Rolling mill men and nailry men are composed of a low class of men especially pudlers; being from every quarter of the globe."

Seems to fit the image I have of Mike Flinn, doesn't it?

Who was Britta's family? BREAKTHROUGH!

OK, it's a little breakthrough, but still...

For years I have been on the hunt for members of my third great-grandmother's family. Her name was Britta Ann Green. She was born in AL in 1834. First she married John L. McGuire and had three surviving children: Ellen Nora, Mary Drucilla, and Stephen Arnold Douglas. After John L. died during the Civil War, she married Mike Flynn and had Margaret Ann (Maggie). She died in 1919 and is buried in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Jefferson County, AL.

Curiously, no one has ever been able to prove who her parents were, other than that they were consistently listed in U.S. Censuses as having come from SC or NC (various U.S. Censuses). In the 1850 Census Britta is listed with the family of John P. McKinnie (McKinney) in Shelby County.

https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/8054/4191539-00661/16778620?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3d1850usfedcenancestry%26gsfn%3dbeauty%2bAnn%26gsln%3dmckinnie%26gsfn_x%3d1%26gsln_x%3d1%26msrdy_x%3d1%26msrpn__ftp%3dalabama%252c%2busa%26msrpn__ftp_x%3d1%26msrpn%3d3%26msrpn_x%3d1%26hc%3d50%26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26redir%3dfalse%26uidh%3dwy5&backlabel=ReturnSearchResults

Nor has anyone been able to prove Britta's relationship to John P. McKinnie's wife, maiden name Mary Ann Green/e; or to the other older female in the household, Nancy Greene, 56, born NC. Mary Ann could be Britta's sister, aunt, cousin, friend, or mother. Nancy could be Britta's mother, stepmother, aunt, cousin, or friend. The most logical explanation is that Nancy Greene, born NC in 1794, is mother to Mary Ann, born NC 1822, and to Britta, born AL 1834. Good theory, but no proof.

I certainly hadn't found any proof of extended family member, after searching over 15 years...

...Until two nights ago.

DNA proof. Just one clue to Britta's family members, but it's solid.

Short version:

My aunt and my Ancestry DNA kits match two fifth-to-eighth cousins with Graphen Holt Green/Greene in their lines. When I click on Shared Matches for both kits, matches that I can prove are descended from Britta show up. Proof via DNA triangulation.

Graphen Holt Green is related to Britta Ann Green.

Tah-dah!!!

Cue the fireworks!!!!!

Stop here, or read further for how I found them.

Long version (you have been warned):

I first started looking at Graphen Green because of a bunch of facts that seemed coincidental. As I looked further, the connections grew.

First, he married in Shelby County, AL, during the same time period (1840 - 1850) that Mary Ann Green married J. P. McKinney. Siblings often married in the same place at different times.

On October 11, 1846, H. Buzby, J.P. , married Graffee Green to Martha J. Lawery/Lowery/Lawrey/Lowry in Shelby County.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3QSQ-G9HV-WZYL?i=204&cc=1743384

Note:

 • Graffee Green in the same place as about the same time as Mary Ann Green.

Second:

While I don't yet know where they are in 1850, G. H. Green and Martha are in TX by 1860.

In the 1860 US Census for TX, GH Green is in Garden Valley, Smith County, TX. He is 36, a farmer, $500, $400, born NC. Also in the household are Martha, 27, Nancy, 11, both born AL; Susan, 8, Jasper 5, Newton, 3, Jeremiah, 2, Alcisty, 8/12, all born TX; Calvin Lowry, 27, and Thomas Lowry, both born AL, farmhands.

https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/7667/4297447_00065/35346374?backurl=https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/799424/person/1401584714/facts/citation/4638977217/edit/record

Note:

• GH Green born NC about 1824, Martha & Nancy born AL

• Thomas and Calvin Lowry, born AL, probably siblings to Martha

Third:

By 1870 Graffen and Martha are in Arkansas but have divorced. This researcher lists their divorce in Clark County, AR, on April 23, 1869, and Graphen's remarriage on April 25, 1869, same place.

https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/799424/person/1401584714/facts?ssrc=

How's that for a how-de-do??? Bet Martha wasn't too happy.

Martha is living separately from G.H. in Barraque, Jefferson County, AR, with Jeremiah, 13, born TX, and Mary (Alcisty), 11, born TX, in the household of A. K. Kelly.

https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/7163/4259271_00198?pid=12750532&backurl=https://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db%3D1870usfedcen%26h%3D12750532%26indiv%3Dtry%26o_cvc%3DImage:OtherRecord&treeid=&personid=&hintid=&usePUB=true&usePUBJs=true

Graphen now lives in Cedar, Clark County, AR, in a household with new wife Caroline (Matilda Bray); her siblings W.L. and Mary C.; and a baby daughter of three months named "Brittan."

Fourth:

In the 1880 US Census for AR, Graffen Greene is Hartford, Sebastian County, AR, with wife Carline and son Jeremiah, Britanna, 10, Laura L., 6, Matilda A., Dovie, 4, Rhoda D., 2, and Mary Williams, 17, keeping house. He is a doctor, born NC, father born SC, mother born NC.

https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/6742/4239969-00111/6747032?backurl=https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/799424/person/1403203526/facts/citation/4638976244/edit/record#?imageId=4239969-00112

Note new information:

• Same son, Jeremiah, listed in both households

• GHG now listed as a medical doctor

• New daughter Britanna

How many coincidences there??? A lot!!!!! Still no solid proof.

Two nights ago, I decided to check Ancestry's Graphen Holt Green family trees to see if there was any new information. I discovered that by clicking on the tree owner's name, I could compare their DNA kits results to the results of kits I am connected to. Bingo! One manager's (let's call him "Joe") two kits matched my aunt's and my kits. When I clicked on shared kits that matched Joe's kits, up gushed results from people I can prove are descended from Britta.

Tah-dah!!!

Cue the fireworks again!!!!!

Britta Ann Green's brick wall is still standing, but at least I've kicked some holes in the mortar and can peek through.

More breakthroughs as I take a big hammer to the sucker. Britta Ann Green, tear down that wall!

Posting for future referenece

Have reason to believe that our gal is related to the Buckalews. This is the best source on the web at the moment, but still have to untangle a huge web:

I have a rather strange problem, but Mary West suggested I write to you.

My g3grandmother was Irena Green of Jefferson County AL. Her date of birth was 1805-1815 based on her marriage date of 1824. I'd put the date closer to 1808-9 because the groom had to produce proof that he had the parents permission to marry Irena. Irena m. Randolph Carter Bibb in Jefferson Co. on 7 Apr 1824.

Irena was the ... daughter of Elizabeth (Betty Green). According to
family sources, the father was William Bucklew. ("Family sources" means without any proof.<g>) Are you aware of any Bucklew family in this area of AL at the critical time?

I normally would discount this type of hearsay, but I have yet to find an error in the oral information I've received from this family. I'm also grasping at straws.....

Irena Green's mother Elizabeth later marries a John G. Butler.

Any ideas you have would be greatly appreciated. Carol Purdy

Subject: Re: Irena Green

What I have is the marriage record of Irena Green & Randolph Carter Bibb from 1824. She must have been underage, because there is also a statement signed by Elizabeth & John G.C. Butler giving permission for the marriage.

I have another document from a little later (which I can't put my hand on at this minute) where Randolph gives money to the Butlers for the care of Irena before her marriage. Also a marriage license between Butler & Elizabeth Green.

...If there were any legal documents, they wouldn't be in AL, because records begin there in 1816--three years before statehood.

Using 16 as a putative age for Irena & figuring that Elizabeth was possibly 16-20 when Irena was born, I figure Elizabeth was born 1788-92. I'll have to go back & check the censuses to see where Eliz was born. Carol

Hi Jack,
It's so good to hear from you. I haven't done much on genealogy
this summer but hope to get back to it when school starts on the 7th!
Thanks for sending along the info on the Green/Buckelew
connection - very interesting! Some of my thoughts...
Following is an exact transcription from the will of your William Buckelew of Marengo Co.
"... It is my will that my grand children that is the children
and heirs of William Green my son the children & heirs of Elizabeth Butler shall have their full portion of the valuation of my property (except the land) to be paid them in money by my Executors hereinafter named which amount of money must be raised out of the other property or to be paid by the several heirs to whom the negroes are devised
..."
I don't think the wording of this will leaves any question
regarding the relationship of Elizabeth Butler to William. It clearly states that Elizabeth's children are William's grandchildren.
The reason that Elizabeth's children did not share in the slaves
is that William left all the slaves to four specifically named people,
Jacob, Lodewick, Sarah & Rachel. Read the transcription below:
"... It is my wish and desire that my son Jacob shall allow said
negro slaves all they can make after supporting them paying their
taxes all my other negro slaves I desire to be devided into four equal parts as near as is possible by persons appointed for that purpose one lot of which I give and devise to my son Jacob Greene one lot to Lodewick Greene one lot to Sarah Kelley one lot to Rachael Buckaloo ... the negroes bequeathed to my said children I desire to be divided as before mentioned & it is my desire that my children to whom the negroes are devised shall keep them in the family and treat them well ..."
There are several entries in the Ancestral File in the Morman
library that appear to be this Elizabeth Green Butler. Because the Ancestral File is full of errors, I normally discount most that is there, but the entries on Elizabeth intrigue me because they contain some exact dates. According to the AF entries,
Elizabeth Green was b. 9 Jul 1786 in VA to Elizabeth Buckaloo b. 21 Jan 1770 VA, d. 1812 Jefferson Co, AL and William Green b. ca 1768 VA. Elizabeth ma 1) John Haynes 2) a Butler.
Exact dates normally imply some sort of legitimate source. I
wrote to the people who submitted the info several times over the

The mystery here is that Jefferson Co, AL was Creek land in 1812
so I don't know where to look for her death. However, since Irena is also placed in Jefferson Co, perhaps we should check the records there for Elizabeth's death, perhaps at a later date?

My comments continue interspersed below.

>Irena was the illegitimate daughter of Elizabeth (Betty Green). According to family sources, the father was William Bucklew. ("Family sources" means without any proof.<g>) Are you aware of any Bucklew family in this area of AL at the critical time?
What proof is available that Irena is Elizabeth's daughter?
Jack, you made copies of William's estate settlement. If Irena was Elizabeth's dau - legitimate or otherwise - she should have received a share of his estate, since he did not specify "legitimate" grandchildren but simply stated "grandchildren". Of course, there is a possibility that she was unknown to the executors of the estate but that is unlikely. Her mother was obviously dec'd when William died in 1842. I will check the copies you sent me later for anything on Irena.

>I normally would discount this type of hearsay, but I have yet to find an error in the oral information I've received from this family. I'm also grasping at straws.....

>Irena Green's mother Elizabeth later marries a John G. Butler.
According to the AF files, Elizabeth's first husband was John Haynes, b. 1785 Oslo, Chrstn, Norway.
Any info Carol can provide on Irena might go a long way tying up
some of these loose ends.
Who gave permission for Irena to marry? Was her mother still
alive in 1824?
Hope we can get more info on this interesting finding.Claire

My note: Considerable information about the descendants of Elizabeth (Green) Butler was provided by Bill Owens <wowens@alltel.net>.

Elizabeth first married John Haynes. Born in 1785 in Oslo, Chrstn, Norway.

About 1809 when Elizabeth was 22, she second married John G. Butler. John G. died before 15 May 1834.

They had the following children:
1661i. John Martin (~1813-)
1662ii. Nancy Minerva (~1815-)
1663iii. Mary
1664iv. William (~1820-)
1665v. Elizabeth (~1820-)
1666vi. Cleopatra (~1822-)

Child:
1667i. Irena (~1808-)

745. Rachel Green. Born about 1790. Rachel died in May 1864; she was 74.

That Rachel is the daughter of Abner Green is pure conjecture as of 19 Nov 97, prompted by following correspondence from Mary <MGP1828@aol.com>:

cf. 1820 Edgefield Co., SC, Census, p. 84: Rachel "Buckelew."

1865, 10 Jan; Probate Court, Clarke Co., AL: This day came Lucy Administrator & filed an appraisment & inventory of said estate which is ordered to be recorded.

"BUCKALOE; Rachel: b. c1785 SC; grandmother of Catherine E. All the Buckaloes in Marengo were related and of the family originally in Bucks Co. PA, NJ, etc. They appear 1735 Henrico Co., VA; to NC & SC; to GA and to Dallas, Marengo, Pickens Cos., AL." "Marengo Co. Early Settlers (Series II), Vol. 8, Issue 42, p. 6.

"She is named in the May 7 1841 will of William Green. Relationship is not
mentioned. He does name his sons Jacob and Lodowick Green, wife Elizabeth,
sarah Kelly and a grandson,William Green, son and heir of Jonathan Green.( I
don't have the Book or page handy) but is Marengo Co Al

"Deed Book R page 367 Marengo Co Al March 3 1858--Ezekiel Buckalue gift deeds
to his wife Rachel the following slaves, Marshall, a boy about 11, Jane, a girl
about 8 and Martha, a girl about 6.....Ezekiel Buckalue executed this deed of
conveyance, cheerfully and freely, as he he considers it right, as the said
slaves descended from the estate of William Green, deceased, THE FATHER OF THE
SAID RACHEL BUCKALEU one of his children and heirs at law."

Rachel married Ezekiel Buckalew (686) , son of George Buckalew (299) (about 1744-before 1806) & Mary (about 1762-). Born about 1790 in SC. Ezekiel died after 1860; he was 70.

Another Marengo Co. record seems to indicate another, maybe his first, wife, named Mary.

1827, 15 July; Minutes of Shiloh Baptist Church, Marengo County, AL; Ezekiel Buckelew, founding member and deacon.

1829, 30 Jan; Marengo Co., Marriage: Matilda Buckaloo to James B. Overton by L.B. Landrum; Ezekial Buckaloo, bondsman. Another source has a marriage date of 30 June 1829 and the groom's name as James Ouston.

1830 Marengo Co., AL, Census, p. 354 (MP #128): Is Rachel Green the wife.
Richard, John and James Huckaby and Jonathan Montgomery are on the next page of the 1830 census. I viewed the microfishe of this census on 19 Feb 1997. (LTB)

1835, 1 July; Marengo Co., AL, Land Entry: Ezekiel Buckaloo, of Miss., received land in Sect 26, T13, R3E.

In my notes I have an Ezekial Buckalou,Planter-Shiloh township 13, range 3 E. (Therin's Marengo Co. Directory for 1860-61) .

1837, 29 Aug, Marengo Co., AL, Deed: Ezekiel Buckalow and Rachel, his wife, to William R. Bowler (or Bowlen), all of Marengo Co., for $550 -- a 79 & 90/100 acre tract. It was the NE 1/4 of the NW 1/4 of Sec. 26 and the SW 1/4 of the SE 1/4 of Sec. 23, all in T13, R3E. Ack. by Ezekiel & Rachell Buckerlew on the same date before George Bareklew, JP.

1850 Marengo Co., AL, Census: Farmer, married Rachel Green of Edgefield Co., SC. Other children are not known. The name Garrett appears among Buckalew descendants in AL, lending further credence to the supposition that Garrett of SC is of the same family. The "Elizabeth" is probably Catherine E., daughter of Wm H. [I suppose to be Ezekiel's son], who went to live with her grandparents. She was still with them at the census of 1860.

1853, 22 June, Marengo Co., AL, Deed: Rachael to Thomas H. Skinner.

1858, 3 Mar.; Marengo Co., AL, Gift Deed: Ezekiel Buckalue, "...for and in consideration of the sum of five dollars to me in hand paid by Rachael Buckalue, and the further consideration of the natural love and affection which I have for my wife, the said Rachael Buckalue..." -- the following named and described slaves: Marshall, a boy about 11 years; Jane, a girl about 8 year & Martha, a girl about 6 years. The slaves were given to Rachael, and to the children of her body. "...Ezekiel Buckalue executed this deed of conveyance, cheerfully and freely, as he considers it right, as the said slaves descended from the estate of William Green, deceased, the father of the said Rachael Buckaleu, one of his children and heirs at law." Wit.: A.B. Hosea & J. W. hall. Acknowledged by Ezekiel the same day before George Barkley, JP.

1860, 13 June, Marengo Co., AL, Census.

"Ezekiel and Rachel Buckelew in House 106. House 107 was Gideon Lucy age 38 b SC wife Elizabeth 30 b SC. He was a physician. Think he is the ?Lucy who was ordered to conduct the inventory for Rachel's estate. Wonder if he or wife were relatives?" (31 Dec 1997 e-mail)
